Since I was a kid, I went fishing with my father spending entire days working on the boat. I did not feel any fatigue: actually, I was really happy when we picked the net and all the fish were coming out of it. However, over the years, the way of fishing has changed. Nowadays, when you retrieve the net you have to pay attention to the trash entangled in it and discard plastic bottles, tires and more. We need to focus on restoring the balance of the sea, as it is a source of life and food for all humankind.

I was born in a family of fishermen that have been practicing this job for ages in the Gulf of Salerno. Cleaning the sea from litter is a must for everybody, since there will always be way less fish and more plastic. This is why I decided to take part into Ogyre’s mission.

My name is Leonardo, I am 49 years old, and I have always lived in Santa Margherita, where I have been working as a fisherman since 1989. After completing my military service, at the age of 19, I took over my father’s fishing boat together with my brother, continuing our family tradition. After several years at sea, I decided to pursue an independent path by purchasing a larger vessel, focusing primarily on the fishing of purple and red prawns. Since 2013, I have been working with my current fishing boat, Palma II.

Luiz Fernando has been fishing for crabs since he was little, but at the age of 16 his father, who was also a fisherman, died and he took over his father's role and started fishing in the open sea. Today he has 2 children and 1 stepson. In his free time, he likes to play football but now he's too old (55 years old) he can't do it anymore because of his knee and back. Currently his go-to hobby is riding a bicycle. When fishing is bad, he tries to get other jobs, such as construction material loader and he even collects aluminium cans from the streets to sell to recyclers. He thinks the project is interesting because it allows to collect a lot of waste from the sea.

My name is Salvatore, I am 51 years old. The first time I went fishing, I was only six years old, together with my father, who was also a fisherman. I still remember that day as if it were yesterday, and the next morning, there was an earthquake. That was when I realized that the sea was my place.
What I love most about fishing is that every trip out to sea is an adventure, even when you don’t catch anything. It’s this unpredictability that fascinates me—you never know what to expect. But for the same reason, the sea must be respected because nature can be both our fortune and our downfall.
That’s why I care so much about cleaning up our coasts from waste.

Stefano was born in Salerno the 1st January 1975, but his adventure in the fishing pathway sees its start at the age of 20 years old. In the first years, he devoted himself to the fishing of anchovies through nets, changing route as he bought the boat ‘Madonna del Carmine’. The latter served as an excuse to found the ‘Longobardi Pesca’, of whom he is the captain, a family business that he’s perpetuating with his two brothers.

Young member of our Salerno-based fleet, Ruggiero falls in love with fishing during its adolescence together with his father. Firstly he devotes himself to the small fishing on 8mt boats, in order to start, some years later, a family run activity focused on trawl fishing on the ‘Nuovo Padre Pio SA 2717’, of which he is the captain and co-owner within his brothers.

Fabrizio Benvenuto initially started working in a workshop, but since he spent every spare moment fishing in 1995 he quit his job to buy a fishing boat.
In 2015 he got a small trawler (Ermete) with which he retrieves kilograms of litter every day. Before, he was forced to throw them back into the water, but now, thanks to a matured environmental awareness and Ogyre helping him to dispose them properly, he gladly gives his contribution to protect the sea.

My name is Antonio, I am 45 years old, and I am the most inexperienced fisherman here in the port, surrounded by colleagues who come from generations of fishermen. My story is different: I started fishing by chance after a career as a professional football player.
Everything changed the day my father-in-law took me fishing for the first time. It was an experience that fascinated me so much that I decided to leave football behind and dedicate myself entirely to fishing. Now, I have been doing this job for eleven years.
What I love most is the sense of peace and freedom that comes with working at sea—something unique and impossible to find on land.

Since I was a child, I practiced fishing as main activity with my father and my relatives.
